King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals is a Saudi public university located in the city of Dhahran in the Eastern Province. It was officially inaugurated by a royal decree issued on 5 Jumada al-Ula 1383 AH corresponding to September 23, 1963 AD under the name of the College of Petroleum and Minerals. In 1975 AD, its academic position and name was changed to the University of Petroleum and Minerals, and in 1986 AD the name of the university was changed to settle as it is now King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. After King Fahd’s visit to it, the university is considered the leading institution in science and technology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
It is the first Arab university in the number of patents, as it includes two-thirds of patents in the Arab world, and it is ranked sixth in the world’s universities, according to the classification of the United States Patent Office. It also entered the list of the top two hundred universities in the world, according to the website of the British company QS, in a classification for the year 2020-2021, and since its establishment until 2014, 30,831 people graduated from it, including 3,346 holders of master’s degrees and 217 people holding a doctorate. Since its establishment, the university has been providing university education limited to male students without female students until 2019, as it allowed female students to apply for graduate studies programs for female students as a first stage and in specific specializations.
